This piece was written, on and off, between June 1998 and August 2000. During this period a number of other works were completed (particularly twine and aux ombres) which have direct connections with trace, both in terms of specific techniques and materials, as well as in more general ideas and strategies. These traces, vestiges of other pieces, exist alongside traces within the work itself as instruments copy each other, inexactly, or point back to what has happened earlier, again without exactitude. These tracings-over become gradually modified, eventually obscuring and obliterating the original trace, leading on to new directions in their overwriting, but always pointing to something that isn’t quite revealed, a faded trace of something that isn’t quite legible.
